A New Home with Old Soul: Custom Historic-Inspired Build on Boston’s South Shore

Designing a new home that feels like it’s always been there is no easy task — but for this custom build on the South Shore, honoring the craftsmanship of the late 1800s was the driving force behind every decision.

From the start, we set out to create a home that blended seamlessly into its historic Hingham neighborhood, while still offering the function and layout modern families need. The result is a newly built house that looks like it’s been standing for over a century.

We took great care in the architectural details — installing tongue-and-groove floors with flathead nails, adding thresholds between rooms (a rarity in most new builds today), and embracing just enough quirk to give the interiors an authentic, time-worn feel.

Other nods to the past include:

• Real wood siding, true to what would have been used in the 1800s

• Carefully selected moldings, wallpaper, and paint treatments for character-rich rooms

• Color-drenched spaces, inspired by historic palettes

• A charming lattice ceiling in the daughter’s bedroom

• Vintage-style hinges and finishes throughout the home including many pieces from the original home that was situated on this land

This is just the beginning — in the coming weeks, we’ll be diving into each space to highlight the thought and craftsmanship that went into every room.

If you’re planning a renovation or new build in Hingham, Scituate, Duxbury, Cohasset or neighboring towns on the South Shore and want a home that blends historic integrity with modern livability, this project is proof that you can have both.

Stay tuned for the room-by-room breakdown.
